“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.”
That about sums it up. When you are two independent filmmakers traveling over 14,000 miles and to the bottom of the globe on your own, it helps to have some friends. We weren’t looking for just anybody to join us on this journey. In fact, we were very particular with whom we brought along. That’s why we call them our partners. They believe in our ability to tell these stories, and we believe in them.
An icon in the world of adventure and expedition, The North Face was one of the first partners to join 51º South on this great endeavor. Supplying crew with gear and support to withstand the extreme, diverse and unpredictable weather of the Falkland Islands, they consistently push the boundaries of innovation so that others can push the boundaries of exploration. We’re proud to carry their motto of ‘Never Stop Exploring’ forward to new and exciting places. And frankly, we’d have been a whole lot wetter, colder and more miserable without them.
Redrock Micro has a strong, unwavering commitment to the independent filmmaking community and to those that not only dream, but seek to make those dreams come alive on the screen. With just two sets of hands and 5 airports to navigate on the way down to the Falkland Islands, it was integral for us to pack efficiently without compromising the quality of our series. Working directly with Redrock’s gear technicians, we were able to completely customize our rigs and equipment to suit the rugged and unique nature of this production. We’re not sure if it’s the electric blue color, but we’re in love.
Like how 51º South looked? So do we! The landscape of the Falkland Islands is nothing short of breathtaking. From its stunning natural light to wildly unpredictable weather patterns, every blink is like a click of the shutter. And we knew, in an effort to accurately reproduce this, we would need to capture it with the highest quality lenses in existence. That decision was easy, and supported by an array of ZE lenses, was also a success. For over 120 years Zeiss has combined supreme precision with an uncompromising passion for optical systems – They’ve made history sharper.
If the Falkland Islands had a spirit animal, it would be the rugged and versatile Land Rover Defender. There are more per capita on the islands than anywhere else on Earth. When our friends at Land Rover Chicago heard about 51º South, they wanted to be a part of the journey. So they loaned us a Defender of our own and wished fair winds on our way. Without their confidence and continued support, this series may have never left the ground… or the pub.
When we began concepting 51º South in the summer of 2011, we were not seeking to create a traditional documentary series. It had to look and feel more contemporary, more textured and complex. Working with us from the very beginning was Boston based graphic designer Eric Lee. Through his dedicated design and direction you now are able to navigate his canvas – our website. Welcome. Click. Explore. Enjoy.
